Lysias proclaimed himself the regent of Antiochus V, who was only 8 years old when he became king in 164. Judah Maccabee fought a battle against Lysias at Beth Zechariah in 163; Judah was defeated and one of his brothers (Eleazar) was killed. Lysias advanced on Jerusalem but had to return to Antioch. Menelaus was killed on the orders of Antiochus V in 163/162. In the meantime, Demetrius I Soter (162-150), the brother of Antiochus IV, managed to escape from Rome where he'd been held hostage and killed Lysias and Antiochus V.
