University of California, Berkeley Professor Kastenberg Engineering 124 Impacts of Technology on Society Engineering 124 Lecture 19 4/3/7 Nuclear Energy, Waste & Weapons Global Energy o 20% increase in energy use over 15 year period in North America o 33% increase in energy use over 15 year period in Asia o Oil is predicted to run out in 50 to 60 years o Natural Gas in 100 years o Coal in 300 years Nuclear Energy o Produced by Nuclear Fission Fermi tried to produce the next heaviest element after Uranium (Plutonium) But when bombarding a neutron onto a Uranium atom, two smaller elements came out of it instead Latium and Barium Sum of the two masses were less than the original atom o The loss in mass is converted into energy o This is where Nuclear power come from The activity of the atoms become really hot Used to boil water to run turbines But if the reaction of the atoms are sped up, you can get a lot of energy out burst in one blow. o
