L AB 2: D IODE P ROPERTIES AND R ECTIFIER C IRCUITS I Purpose and Background This laboratory has three objectives: 1. To learn how to check with a digital multimeter whether a diode is good or bad; 2. To measure the characteristics of a silicon diode; 3. To build and test a half-wave rectifier, a bridge rectifier circuit and a filtered rectifier circuit. Recall that when a rectifier diode is forward-biased and the biasing voltage is larger than the barrier potential (0.7 V), the forward current increases greatly with the voltage drop. The forward resistance r’ d for a given current point I o is defined by: r' = V I d I = I o Resistance r’ d can be estimated from two measurements of the diode current and the diode voltage drop around I o . II Diode Check Prelab: Read pp. 31 to 33 from Floyd (testing of a diode); Answer questions 38, 39 on pp. 39 Procedures: a) Connect the two leads of the digital multimeter (DMM; set to measure resistance) to the anode and cathode of a 1N914 small-signal diode as shown on the following graph (positive terminal to the anode, negative terminal to the cathode). Note the resistance reading when the DMM is set to a max of 200 K. Change the range on the DMM to 2 M and 20 M and observe what happens to the resistance reading. 1N914 + - b) Reverse the DMM leads (positive terminal to the cathode, negative terminal to the anode). Note the resistance reading for different setting of the DMM resistance range. c) In the report, note the readings that you obtained in steps a) and b).
