CTCS 464 October 4, 2007 - Late 80’s, more diversified representation of hip hop culture - Middle class hip hop – middle class people having middle class outlooks - Lowest rung on social ladder, uneducated, unskilled, the ‘wretched of the world’ - Class warfare going on - Class dynamic coming to hip hop - Abuse and exploit those closest to them - How hip hop draws from pimping -> 1. Mouth piece, 2. Pimp style. Pimpin, dope dealin, examples of abuse - “Pimping the system” taking advantage of the system - t00 short came from the underground started selling tapes from his car trunk. Connecting with the community - too short – pimpology - hip hop has always had its own internal critique, very keen on critiquing itself - Ice Cube – Who’s the Mack - Don’t judge a book by its cover, anyone can be da mack - Common – a film called pimp, - Scarface -> most referred to movie in hip hop - Why is scarface so appealing to hip hop - Everything about the film is over the top - Film begins on a political note
