University of California, Berkeley Professor Kastenberg Engineering 124 Impacts of Technology on Society Engineering 124 Lecture 7 Feb 8, 2007 “An Inconvenient Truth” Part I The most vulnerable part of the earth ecological system is our atmosphere Global Warming Summary o Sun radiation comes in as a form of light radiation Infrared radiation is reradiated off the surface of the earth The atmosphere keeps the some of the infrared radiation from all radiating out back into space That keeps out planet relatively temperate But greenhouses gasses keeps even more of the infrared radiation in under the atmosphere and warms up the earth Carbon Dioxide levels has been measured and is rising in the past decades o Breathe in carbon dioxide during the summer when all the vegetation is growing o Exhale carbon dioxide during the fall and winter when vegetation does o Normal to have a zigzag up and down pattern of CO2 in the atmosphere Northern Hemisphere has significantly more land mass meaning a lot more vegetation
