Explain the view of racism and inequality as the result of structural discrimination versus the result of individual prejudice and actions. “Placing Race in Context” By Rodriguez - , there were by the 60s, race as a biological concept was useless - in the US, it was biologically based. White = absence of any non-white blood, black = presence of any black blood - in Latin America different dimensions like class, physical type, ethnic background - definitions of “race” vary from culture to culture, close knit to historical events, developments, or context (for ex. Germans think Jews were a race apart from other Europeans) - in Puerto Rico, race relations was accompanied by the development of a distinct nomenclature to describe different groups - this nomenclature and racial discourse made the race seem multidimensional - in the US at this time(1930), this multidimensional idea was not introduced, and it was simply Black and Whites. Negro referred to Native American Indians, Asians, or Europeans who intermarried with blacks - in the US, race is a characteristic that does not change after birth, more dependent on a person’s genetic make-up and physical appearance than on socio-economic characteristics - history: Spanish contact with northern African populations made them more tolerant of different color groups, conception of slaves as being subjects or vassals of the crown and having certain rights, as opposed to the US who treated them as property - Spanish Catholic Church encouraged conversion and baptism of the slaves - In a population survey where an interviewer was present, Hispanics identified themselves overwhelmingly as white (97%), while in the privacy of their own home, 40 percent chose “other”, 90% wrote Hispanic - United States, choose to divide its culture into white and black races, but a Puerto Rican will not “The Possessive Investment In Whiteness: Racialized Social Democracy and the “White” Problem in American Studies” “whiteness” has a social cash value whites are encouraged to “invest” in whiteness to secure resources, power, and opportunity European immigrants did not consider themselves a part of “white” society until it served a purpose historically it has been more than a white v. black issue, encompassing the conquest and extermination of Native Americans, the enslavement of African Americans, and
