Drawing Lewis Structures 1) Find total number of valence electron pairs: 2) Form a “skeleton structure” of the molecule: 3) Subtract bonding EP’s from valence EP s 4) Distribute the remaining electron pairs: a) Add as lone pairs to all terminal atoms to satisfy the octet rule. b) If any ep’s remain, add them to central atom(s). 5) Satisfy octet rule: a) No. of valence electrons per atom = group no. - 10 for p block. b) For ions, subtract cationic charge, add anionic charge. c) Divide the total number by 2 to get the total number of valence electron pairs (ep’s). a) Connect atoms with single bonds, after deciding which atom(s) are “central” and which are terminal. b) H is always terminal (can only form one bond). c) Choose either the atom furthest to the left or a heavier atom in the periodic table as central (these atoms can usually form more bonds).
