University of California, Berkeley Professor Kastenberg Engineering 124 Impacts of Technology on Society Engineering 124 Lecture 9 Feb. 15, 2007 “An Inconvenient Truth” Part II Ocean Conveyor o Flow of warm and cold water in the world’s oceans o When warm water flows north up the Atlantic, water gets cooled down at the Artic As it cools, the water becomes more dense and sinks at a rate of 5 billion gallons per second So water flows back south to keep the conveyor running The conveyor keeps the warm water coming to warm Europe But during the end of the ice age, a large pool of freshwater from the North American glaciers poured into the ocean, diluting the salt and making the oceans water less dense The less dense water stopped the conveyor sending Europe back into Ice Age for another thousand years Global warming are causing a massive change in ecology o Mosquito lines in elevation has been climbing and spreading malaria o Invasive species like the pine beetle
