LDL-LDL Receptor Protein Interaction The LDL receptor protein consists of the ligand binding and b-propellor extracellular domains, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic tail with a NPXY sorting signal At extracellular pH (~7.0) the R1-R7 repeats of the ligand binding domain bind to the apoB protein of the LDL particle This binding causes conformational changes that allow the NPXY motif to recruit AP-2 adaptors and the receptor is internalized by clathrin In the late endosome, low pH (~5.0) allows interaction between the b-propeller domain and the R1-R7 repeats, diplacing the LDL and allowing recycling of the LDL receptor back to the plasma membrane
