Intermediate Filaments - Named because of their thickness (10 nm), which is between actin microfilaments (7 nm) and microtubules (25 nm). - Found in animal cells but not in plant and fungi (bacteria IF). - In epidermal cells and the axons of nerve cells, IFs are 10x more abundant than microfilaments or microtubules. - Different from the other two classes of filaments More stable Form α -helical rods Subunits don’t bind NTPs (ATP/GTP) No role in cell motility (structural role only) No IF associated motor proteins found.
