Class Notes 18:01 Proliferation: The Wives of Zeus • Metis (wisdom, cleverness)- eaten by Zeus before child could be born, Athena (Tritogeneia) born from Zeus’ head, taking on the ability of wisdom and cleverness • Themis- Watchers, Lawfulness, Justice, Peace and the Fates: weaving of destiny Clotho (the Spinning), conceived of basically creating the wool and getting rready for spinning Lachesis (the Lot-Casting) extending the wool is basically the extension of a persons life Atropos (Not turning) cuts wool, when it is cut it means the extent of a persons life More wives 3. Eurynome- The three Graces 4. Demeter-Persephone 5. Memory- the nine Muses 6. Leto- Apollo and Artemis 7. Hera- Hebe, Ares and Eileithyia Hera’s birth of Hephaestus through parthenogenesis (unlike Homer) , gave birth without Zeu’s help, a monster and seriously flawed The Ages of Man • Age of Gold- Time of Cronos They become good spirits ( daimons / daemon) –unknown divine presence when something bad happens, not always
