Dania A. Sánchez Microbiology II Dr. Tatum-Broughton Fall 2008 David Smith is five years older than Jonathan Kelley. They are long-time friends who met each other when Jonathan moved to David's town after his adoptive mother passed away. David could relate because his own mother had recently passed away so they were two young boys without maternal guidance. People often mentioned how much they looked alike even though they were from different towns and Jonathan was adopted. One day, they decided to get tested to see if they were, in fact, related. Tests revealed that while their paternal markers were completely different, they had the same mitochondrial DNA. This led them to believe that they are brothers. However, family and medical history revealed that David's mother only gave birth to one child. Therefore, David's mother could not have been Jonathan's mother. How do you explain the fact that David and Jonathan have the same mitochondrial DNA without having the same mother? M
