Andrews 1Emma Andrews Mrs. Joan Hight Literature 1A 29 April 2015 Character Foils: The Illuminators of Literary Devices Most people tend to wear colors that bring out their most attractive features, however Charlotte Bronte highlights the worst and best in people by using character foils. In Jane Eyre,Bronte uses foils of contrasting characters to highlight specific qualities or features of the other contrasting characters. The character foils in Jane Eyrefeed into the climax and affect Jane's overall way of being. Without the character foils present in this novel, Jane's development of character and emotional growth would have perished rather quickly. In the classic novel Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte brings her characters to life through the foils of Georgiana Reed and Jane Eyre, Miss Temple and Mrs. Reed, and St. John Rivers and Mr. Rochester. Even though Jane and Georgiana Reed are cousins, the foil between the two of them exemplify Jane's plain physique and docile nature in contrast to Georgiana's beauty and immature behavior. For example, Jane described Georgiana Reed as "her beauty, her pink cheeks and golden curls, seemed to give delight to all who looked at her, and to purchase indemnity for every fault." (Bronte 21).
