The Characteristics of a Source of EMF Physics 2B Lab 3 Abstract : The objective is to illustrate the condition for maximum power output and the dependence of terminal voltage on internal resistance and current. Theory: An emf source in a circuit will deliver power in a manner dependent upon its internal resistance. A battery-driven circuit can be modeled using an emf source, with an internal, r, and external or load resistance, R, as shown in figure 1. Figure 1. Circuit consisting of a source emf, E, having internal resistance, r, and load resistor R. The current, I, through the circuit can be calculated as follow I = E/ (R + r) 1. Power, P, in a circuital element is given by P = IV = I 2 R 2. where V is the voltage across it. From equation 1 and 2, the following power equation can derived P = E 2 R / (R + r) 2 . 3. Inspection of the equation reveals that at very small and for very large values of load resistance, R, the power approaches zero. Therefore, the power delivered will be at a maximum for some intermediate load resistance R. In order to find the resistive load, R that results in maximum
