D.C. Resistive Circuit Power Budget and Balance Physics 2B Lab 4 Objective : The purpose of this experiment demonstrates that power delivered by a battery should be equal, or comparable to, that dissipated in the driven circuit. Theory When charge, ΔQ, is transported across a source of emf of potential difference ΔV it gains potential energy, ΔQΔV. As the charges move through resistive elements, including resistors, in the circuit driven the gained energy is dissipated. Laws of conservation dictate that the energy delivered by the charges from the battery should equal to the energy dissipated through the circuit. In addition, the rate at which the seat of emf source/battery delivers energy, or power, should also be equal to the rate at which the resistors dissipate it. In general Power, P, is given by P=VI 1. where V is the voltage and I is the current. Ohm’s Law states that V=IR 2. where R is the resistance.
