The Kangxi Emperor- First emperor of the High Qing Era r. (1662-1722). Became emperor at a young age, put down the rebellion of the Three Feudatories (1673-1681), captured Taiwan and Tibet, compiled the Kangxi Dictionary and the Grand Encyclopedia (over 5000 volumes). The Qianlong Emperor- Third emperor of the High Qing r. (1736-1795) strong man/ruler. Gained complete control of Tibet and the new territory (Xiangyuong sp?) after a long campaign against the Zunghur (1735-1759). Had two rebellions in Jinchuan (sp?) the Tibet/Chinese mingling area 1747-49 and 1771-76. Launched the project of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries, and built the Yaun Ming Yaun gardens. Spelling stuff is based on my best guess from what he said in lecture. The Complete Library of the Four Treasuries-Cultural project started by the Qianlong Emporer that hired over 360 scholars and 3500 plus staff which compiled 36000 volumes and 10230 titles over the course of 1772-1782. Despite massive size was also a symbol of cultural stunting as many titles were destroyed as anti-Manchu in the selection process. The Jinshi degree- The highest degree possible in the civil service system, also known and the Imperial or Metropolitan degree. In over 300 years on 27000 people got this degree. Given once every 3 years this followed the provincial and district tests. Tests based on Confucian ideals and included a difficult eight-legged essay. Important as a symbol and instrument of Chinese traditional bureaucracy. The Baojia system- local security system that organized every 10 households in jia and every 5 jia into Bao. Allowed people to watch over and help each other and gave jobs to the local gentry and degree holders that could not find a position in the limited size of the central bureaucracy. Matteo Ricci- Jesuit missionary lived (1552-1610) who lived in China for a long period
