Priyal Chitale IBD Year 11 Dhirubhai Ambani International School BIOLOGY LABORATORY REPORT – POTATO OSMOSIS Aim: To find the solute potential of potato tuber cell sap using the massing method. Introduction: The solute potential of potato tuber cell sap, is basically the concentration of solutes in the solution that makes up the tuber cell sap. When the potato cells are kept in a test tube containing a solution with the same solute potential as the solution contained in the tuber cell sap, there should be no change in the mass or length of the potato cylinders, as an equal amount of water enters and leaves through its cell membranes. Therefore, by determining which solution it is in which the potato cylinder shows no change in mass, we will be able to determine the solute potential of potato tuber cell sap. This is also called an isotonic solution – the solution that perfectly matches the solution contained in the potato cells itself, and in which potato cells act as they normally do. Therefore this solute potential of the potato tuber cell sap, can also be called the isotonic point of a potato cell. A hypertonic solution contains a higher concentration of solutes, relative to the solute concentration of the solution within the cell itself, while a hypotonic solution contains a lower concentration of solutes, relative to the solute concentration of the solution within the cell itself. Therefore, that means, if a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, then water will move from the area of high concentration to low concentration via osmosis, that is, the transfer of water will take place from the cell to outside of the cell, and the cell will shrink and become flaccid. In plant cells, like in a potato cell, while the cell
