CH 301 Chapter 2 part 2: COVALENT BONDING NOTE: WHERE YOU SEE “EXAMPLE SHEET” REFER TO THE SEPARATE DOCUMENT WITH THE EXAMPLES. This is a summary of all the principles shown in class. RULES FOR DRAWING STRUCTURES: For covalent compounds: 1.Write the formula of the compound (Fundamentals C&D) 2.Count the number of valence electrons in each atom (#valence electrons = group #) 3.Draw ‘skeleton’ structure: find center atom, arrange others around it. 4.Draw one single bond from the center atom to each surrounding one. 5.Count the number of electrons in single bonds (TWO for each) 6.Fill in remaining electrons - try for OCTET around all EXCEPT H. 7.Use lone pairs of electrons to make double or triple bonds to satisfy condition 6. 8.Make the middle atom ‘violate’ the octet rule if necessary EXAMPLE SHEET 1 BONDS AND BOND ORDER Each shared pair of electrons is a bond shown as a dash “ - BOND ORDER: number of bonds between two atoms THE HIGHER THE ORDER OF THE BOND: THE STRONGER THE BOND

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
