Growth In year 1700 when most colonies had developed the pop was 250,000 In 1775 at the start of revolution the pop is 2.5 million 75% increase in 75 years 2. Where From? Having lots of babies People are coming in huge numbers, some forced some freely Vast majority coming from England which get best land Dutch are coming going to NY Swedes are coming to NJ French Protestants are coming to Penn. Jews are coming to Penn Germans are coming from strange areas of Europe to Penn The Scotts-I rish came to backcountry of the colonies Largest non English Group- Africans which are enslaved 3. Melting Pot? Today is a melting pot But nor for colonial America Metaphor Colony America is more of a salad bowl than a melting pot All from separate places and not loosing identities With 1 exception of the Africans so many diff cultures backgrounds, and languages To survive they have to blend and African identity is created Not one culture until they came to America 4. Differences Lots of differences Languages, Religions, Agriculture methods, race, traditions, music, entertainment, etc. 5. Class Class distinctions began to evolve Upper sort (1) Descended from gentry (2) Large land (3) Dominated colonial Gov (4) Traded extensively with Europe (5) Cosmopolitan-understanding of what is fashionable outside their environment Middle sort (1) Tend to be folks that are smaller landholders (2) Service the upper sort (3) Sell the goods (4) Have a vote and elect upper sort (5) Tend to be cosmopolitan Lower sort (1) Tend to be Scotts I rish (2) Lived in back country (3) Provincial-Dont have understanding of culture (4) Live in a barter economy (5) Politically powerless...
