Immigration During this time period about 5 million immigrants come to America About 40% of these immigrants are coming from Ireland because of the Potato Famine Northeastern cities have huge influx of immigrants Not everyone happy about this and it sparks nativism 2. Nativism Immigrants will work for anything which in turn lowers wages for all Religious/Political reason because immigrants were catholic in a protestant faith based country Going to be electing catholic official who in turn take orders from the pope Called nativism because the Americans were “born” here Prevent it by using organized crime on the Irish Form a party called the Nativist party trying to get people elected in local and state election Called the know knothings 3. Mechanization-means machines doing the work that man used to do South (1) Ever since American Revolution Southern economy has began to suffur (2) Tobacco was no longer bringing in huge revenue because it was being grown around the world (3) Cotton had the potential to bring back the economy in the South (4) Cotton has a problem 2 forms (a) Long stem very hard on the soil but easy to separate

(b) Short stem helps rejuvenate soil but hard to separate (5) Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin (6) Now profitable to grow short stem cotton (7) But there is another problem because it doesn’t grow very high (8) Incredibly difficult labor so they invest more money than ever in slaves (9) Going to need more land Northeast (1) More factories that have machinery (2) #1 industry that was transformed was textile manufacturing (3) Replacing old system of putting out system (a) Every stage is putting out to next house with textiles (b) Now have all machines under one roof and is cost effective (4) People now have to go get a job in the factory (5) Wages Incredibly bad, housing becomes very slum like (6) Giving up their time schedule and people felt like they were giving up their freedom and lives Midwest (1) Now there is a need for food since people are leaving farms to go to factories (2) Size of farm limited to how much they could plow in one day, ox pulled plow very slowly (3) John Deere helps to transform Midwest (4) He designs a new plow that needs less pressure and harness for a horse that takes advantage of their strength (5) Farms get a lot bigger (6) Wheat is the man crop, reaper becomes inefficient

(7) Cyrus McCormick comes up with the mechanized reaper (8) Midwest can now began to produce much of the food that is consumed by Americans 4. Transportation Revolution Each of these regions are doing more that causes the need for them to be better connected All levels of government get involved in funding and building roads and improving roads, canals, Erie canal in NY Invention of the steam boat makes it easy to move goods up the river Play huge role in American economy Railroads began to criss-cross the country
