The Great Depression and the Expansion of Government I. The First New Deal 1. General Conditions People don’t trust the banks and have taken their money out of them, many banks have closed because they no longer have money and can no longer help people Nature played a cruel trick on Midwest with the Dust Bowls causes from droughts which destroyed what little crops had been produced Unemployment was around 25% at its height, some cities it was as high as 50%, farmers who were also affected don’t count in this number People are moving all across the country to find work, People move to California only to find the same situation, Hobos are common who were workers or businessmen who had lost everything Hoovervilles, make shift camps with tents in which many people lived Social bandits, who become celebrities because they rob the banks and seen as people who are sticking it to these institutions, Bonnie and Clyde, this also shows the moral decline 2. FDR’s Mandate FDR came along and said the government will do something but unsure at the time before the election, Had a democratic congress indicating that the American people wanted something done He made an impact like no one else in 100 days 3. The First 100 Days AAA (1) Agricultural Adjustment Agency or Administration (a) Pays farmers to stop growing certain products and pays other farmers to grow certain products (b) Hopefully this will raise the prices of these agricultural products FDIC
