The Vietnam War I. First Contact 1. Postwar containment French Colony (1) Vietnam(Endo China) was a French Colony established in the days of colonization W.W.II (1) During W.W.II Vietnam was captured by Japanese, but during the rest of the war a combination of Vietnamese and French worked together to successfully drive the Japanese out Nationalist movement (1) This group that worked to drive them out started a nationalistic movement to drive the French out. (2) America becomes strong ally of European countries giving up colonies and social Darwinism with support of the U.N., But Impact of china (1) Communist revolution in china was resisted with American help but the resistance ultimately failed. If France leaves Vietnam will be overtaken by communism (2) America encourages France to hold on this colony Fighting the French (1) This nationalistic movement must now turn to fight them (2) In a sense because we didn’t support this movement it forced them to seek out communism and fall into its arms. 2. American Aid Money (1) France is getting money from Marshall plan to repair country and to money to keep their presence in Vietnam

(2) Despite the money given by America the Communist gain much control of North Vietnam Dien Bein Phu (1) In 1954 having lost most of North Vietnam the French lose a major battle at Dien Bein Phu. The French decide to leave and tell America their own their own. The US decides not to leave. U.N. steps in (1) UN which is driven by the US is pushed into this war. It mandates that Vietnam will be temporarily be split between North and South. The successful communist forces will be able to establish a government that will be able to stabilize the region. In the south a democratic government would be allowed to do the same. Once things had calmed down then they would have a national election where the people could vote on the government which to unify their country with. 3. Block a vote Almost immediately America begins to block this vote from taking place anytime soon because the economy is really bad which means that communism will be very appealing. Ultimately want it to happen, but need to give money to south Vietnamese government that can restore the economy of south Vietnam and then they can have an election so they can choose between governments which would sway the people toward democracy. 4.
