Scaling Back The “Great Society” and Ending the Cold War I. Nixon 1. Domestic agenda Nixon was a republican dealing with a democratic congress which had been in control since the 60’s. He surprisingly worked well with the democratic congress and kept up the funding for many of the great society programs. They stopped giving them as much money and gave more of it to the states. He also expanded Medicaid, Medicare, and social security. 2. Foreign Agenda Oversaw Vietnamization. Cooled off cold war by getting the SALT treaty with the Soviet Union. 3. Election of 1972 Won in a major landslide with 61% of the vote. He won every state except, D.C., and Massachusetts 4. Watergate Surveillance (1) The type of things that happened, were not a first time occurrence. He was paranoid that someone was out to get him. He had a history of using government institutions to follow his enemies. Civil Rights, College Protest leaders, Head of Democrats. Used government to get information CREEP (Committee to Re-Elect the President) (1) Formed before the 1972 election to find out the democratic strategy for the election Break-in (1) On June 17 th 1972 there was a break-in in the Watergate Hotel. 5 were initially arrested. 2 were later arrested. 3 had connections to Creep. D.C. police were very suspicious because they were caught with high- tech surveillance equipment. Cover up

(1) The white house took the lead on this to see if there were any connections which concluded they acted independently. Nixon went on to win by a land slide. Investigations (1) Woodward and Bernstein were 2 Washington Post writers who didn’t let it go. They began to investigate. Deep Throat was there secret contact. He gave them office that they should follow the money. The 5 who had been arrested bank accounts got some money sent to them. If they could find were it was coming from it would lead to the white house. (2) Top official, William Felt, Assistant Director of the F.B.I. who felt he overlooked for a promotion. (3) W&B found the link and begain to publish News articles that made the claims Senate (1) These articles made the senate get involved. They subpoenaed in the inner circle of the white house. Most didn’t give up any thing, but some claimed that there had been a big cover up directed straight from
