I am confused: eat is action , tennis is activity . Why is the first verb and the second noun ? happen (v.) is an event . What are trip or journey, or event ? Aren’t they events , too? Is to be a doctor (n.) more or less of a state than to exist (v.)?

Adjective: A word that describes a person or thing , for example big , red and clever in a big house , red wine and a clever idea , or as in: Reliable’ is not an adjective that could be applied to my car. a green round big thing a green round small thing

sleep expresses an action (or a state) and therefore it is a verb. asleep describes a thing and therefore it is an adjective… Mmmmmh. ... is sleeping and being sleep so different?

Where is the problem? Is the Oxford Advanced Learner Dictionary a bad dictionary? Or does the problem reside elsewhere? The Oxford Advanced Learner Dictionary is quite standard, actually. Other dictionaries look pretty much the same (check, if you want to be sure).
