Antonio Luo The Vietnam War has been considered to be the longest military conflict  throughout U.S. history. The war was a military struggle between the United  States and the South Vietnamese army in conflict with the North Vietnamese and  the National Liberation Front (NLF) from 1959 to 1975. America had over five  hundred thousand troops fighting against an estimated ten thousand Viet Cong  guerillas. The hostilities in the war caused millions of tragic deaths. The U.S  soldiers that participated in the war were not told why they were fighting and why  their sacrifice was necessary. The soldiers were completely kept in the dark  during the whole war. Through   all   odds,   the   Americans   should   have   easily   overcome   the  Vietcong   and   achieve   their   goal   of   keeping   South   Vietnam   free   from  Communism. But they didn't. There were various reasons as to why America did  not win in the Vietnam War. The U.S. soldiers were not prepared for the guerilla  tactics that was being utilized. They were not ready to deal with the typical  geography of Vietnam. The American troops had also developed a very low  1

U.S. military advisers had been involved with Vietnam during the 1950s.  They were to help aid the French army in the war. During the 25 years period,  the war had created much pressure in US history. The lives of more than fifty- eight thousand Americans have been taken (www.rjsmith.com ). Approximately  three to four million Vietnamese were killed, a large number of whom were  innocent (www.rjsmith.com ). Another two million Lao and Cambodian victims  were drawn naturally into the war (Sinhanouk 102
