Compromise of 1820 was an agreement passed between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the US. It prohibited slavery for all new states north of the the border of the Arkansas territory. This separation contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War because of the inflaming antislavery sentiment in the North.
