Tignor: The Great War The Fighting - Everyone thought the war would be short, especially the Germans because of their plan to wheel into Paris through neutral Belgium - Stopped at the Battle of Marne in September 1914 and forced to retreat - Soldiers hid in trenches until given orders to jump out into no man's land and fight in enemy trenches. Machine guns and barbed wire waited for them - Russia progressed into East Prussia but Germany defeated them at Tannenberg - Germany tried to win with the introduction of poison gas, but Ally soldiers simply wore gas masks - Allied invasion of Turkey at Gallipoli in 1915 was a fail - 15 million enlisted in Russia, mostly serfs - 80% of males from the age of 15-49 joined war effort in France - Women replaced men in their jobs in factories, and they were also doctors and nurses on the front lines - More soldiers meant less people tending the farm and more women in factories, and constant riots would occur due to food shortages - This civilian pressure forced governments to promise welfare, pension for widows and the elderly, and women’s suffrage -
