The 14 Points (President Woodrow Wilson, 1917): - open/public covenants of peace - Freedom of navigation upon the seas - Those who agree to peace get all economic barriers lifted for them - Gun laws will be stricter for domestic security - Colonies have a say in whether they should get sovereignty or not - Give Russia a second chance for entry into the global sphere again - Belgium must be granted as much sovereignty as it wants - France gets its territory back and tensions from Franco-Prussian War must be resolved - Readjustment of Italian borders - Let Austria-Hungary redevelop - Serbia given free access to sea and Balkan relations determined by historical allegiances and their own decisions - Turkey given sovereignty and minority nationalities given security of life - Polish state be created and given freedom to use the sea and sovereignty - Association of nations be made to ensure political independence and sovereignty to all nations - Americans are trying to fight imperialists through the treaty. No beef with Germany, and they only want Germany to accept equality among all - Shows skepticism of Germany because America asks Germany to specify who they talk for when they talk (the military? The legislators? The imperialists?) - Main idea: justice, liberty, and safety for all peoples and nationalities - US is devoted to doing anything for peace World War I in World History: - War was just a civil war through Asian eyes. Entente powers invited Asians but the Germans were against it. - Indian officers used to protect Suez Canal - Chinese officers join the Allies in August 1917 - Still discontent with British from the colonies. The Indians would be happy when hearing of Allies’ victories - They supported the Germans the most but the Germans did not want the Chinese to fight with them - Indians and Chinese would learn about false propaganda and democracy after exposure on battlefront - Indians and Chinese were asked to give loans but they wanted promises of freedom and sovereignty - During war, Japan plans out expansion - Indian capital rises as British enterprises slow - Liberal groups in the West give support to nationalist groups in the East - Leninism shines light on equality regardless of race, so Western nations have to accept these ideas because they are known for advocating often for equality. Leninism also fights imperialism and the control that Western powers have over colonies - Indian movement for independence becomes huge during the war
