The Fall of Imperial Russia - Russia was united well at the beginning of the war but soon saw that it was not well prepared - Nicholas tried to do his own thing but that ended up angering the middle class and Duma - Nicholas sets off for the front and the tsarina rules with Rasputin as her adviser The Provisional Government - Equality and rights were given to all but the leaders did not support an extensive socialist revolution - Kerensky does not split up large chunks of land for peasants in the countryside because that would lower numbers in the peasant armies - The provisional government was moderately controlled by the Petrograd Soviet (thousands of workers and socialists), which limited authoritarian power in the government by giving power to elected committees of soldier s ( Army Order No. 1 ) - The lack of authoritarian power → less discipline in the army and a transfer to anarchy towards the end of 1917 (Peasants stole land from landowners) Lenin and the Bolshevik Revolution - Lenin’s three main ideas: - Only revolution can break capitalism - A socialist revolution is very possible in a country like Russia, where capitalism does not encompass life (because peasants make up a large part of the population ) - Lenin relied on human leadership to start a revolution, so there became a necessity for a highly disciplined workers party - In 1903, the Mensheviks (meaning “the minority”) overpowered the Bolsheviks (meaning “the majority”) but Lenin still kept the name - Kerensky was blamed for the military failure in WWI - Leon Trotsky planned out the revolution and led his Petrograd trustees with the Bolsheviks to seize buildings and arrest officials - The Bolsheviks become the majority party and take over the government and name Lenin the leader - Reasons why the revolution and seizure of power was successful: - In 1917, democracy led to anarchy -
