Asks Castro if he’s frightened about all the power he has at age 32 – he says he isn’t scared but maybe a little worried – says he has a lot of self confidence i. Was wearing his pajamas – at home with Fidel B. Romantic revolutionary figure – charismatic C. Thirst for glory and heroism that he quenched but drove many into exile who didn’t agree with him D. Critique narrative that it was a one man revolution – revolutions don’t happen because of one individual no matter how charismatic they are II. Periods of 20 th Century Latin American History A. Populism, Nationalism and Industrialization (1930-1959) – Chasteen Chapter 7 i. Emergence of populists leaders – position themselves of leaders of the people ii. Popular because champion themselves of workers and push program of industrialization iii. Economic model that is based on export of raw materials is a flawed model and that Latin American countries need to create factories to create goods that they normally import from other countries a. Great Depression – prices and goods collapse and therefore Latin American countries collapse so they realize they can’t be dependent upon the world market B. Revolution and Reaction (1959-1991) i. Ultimately countries aren’t able to industrialize ii. Need consumers – smaller countries don’t have enough consumers to buy their goods iii. See period in which there are a lot of revolutions in Latin American – many inspired by Marxism and the Cuban Revolution
