Adapted themselves to the land – pages 26-27 o Non-sedentary – adaptation to difficult environments Hunters and gathers o Semisedentary – forest dwellers Still hunted but could also be dependent on agriculture while non-sedentary could not Soil could only last for a few years – shifting cultivations and slash and burn Built villages but moved them frequently Organized tribes by gender roles – not class – didn’t build empires o Full sedentary Permanent settlement on high plateaus Societies more complex and some constructed great empires – Aztec, Inca, Maya All stationary, permanently sustainable forms of agriculture Examples on page 27 Permanent agricultural base allowed the growth of larger, denser conglomerations of people, construction of cities, greater labor specialization etc. Stratified by class The Encounter o Negative connotations with Columbus and the discovery and so he just gave it a new name –page 24 o Semi-sedentary Didn’t have much that the Europeans wanted so were pretty much left alone – 36
