Began a series of 31 dynasties, ca. 170 pharaohs Egyptian Chronology The unification of the Two Lands: the NARMER PALETTE,the worlds first historical document. The Narmer Palette • Ceremonial palette made of slate, 64 cm, dates to ca. 3100 B.C. found at Hierakonpolis in 1896 • Shows Narmer, first Pharaoh of a unifed Egypt, subjugating lower (northern Egypt) • On one side, Narmer wears a bulbous hat, symbol of upper Egypt, he is about to strike down a prisoner in presence of Horace, the hawk-god of Hierakonpolis. Below are lions? with their long necks intertwined, symbolizing unification. • Evidence Egypt unified by force with Upper Egypt conquering lower Egypt. The world’s first historical document. Prior to the 3rd Dynasty, kings were buried in low mud brick tombs or mastabas.
