SOLAR ENERGY Solar energy is the light and heat that is given off by the  sun.  It can be harnessed by humans to be used in a variety  of ways.  There are a few different types of solar energy  solutions including active solar and passive solar.  Solar  energy is extremely important to consider.  With the energy  needs of our civilization, it is a waste not to harness the  energy of the sun.   We chose solar energy because it is nearly an infinite  resource.  Solar energy use does not create any pollution or  harm the environment in any way.  It is an exceedingly  clean resource.

TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE: TECHNO- CENTRIC CONCERNS Solar technology is expensive!  It can take anywhere from  20-100 thousand dollars to install a new system.   The up-front cost is great, but the technology pays for itself  in a mere ten years with the money you save.     Solar technology is complex and requires a great deal of  specialty to install and use.   There are ways to use solar energy in more basic “passive”  ways such as Trombe wall construction and solar  heaters/cookers.

TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE: SOCIO- CENTRIC CONCERNS There is enough electro-magnetic energy produced every 24  hours to power the entire world for 27 years.   BUT: The top efficiency that has been reached using a  photovoltaic cell system is 31%.   What are we supposed to do at night when the sun is not  visible? Solar energy can be stored during the day.   Solar energy is versatile!  It can be used to heat homes,  power your car, or provide the electricity for a football  stadium.  There is almost no maintenance required beyond the initial
