When they moved he was 12 years old and his only sister was 14. His neighbors and friends tried to talk his parents out of it, however they went over in 1938, and the war broke out in 1939. Andy Szasz went to school in Romania. His families were farmers; they owned 35 acres, using cows and water buffalo for work animals. Everything was done by hand on the farm, except a steam powered tractor with a long belt which was used to thrash the grain.
