South Africa-proving grounds -Thousands of Indian men and women marched across forbidden borders -peacefully protesting British injustices -Beatings, arrests, imprisonment -1914- South African whites-agreed -Abolish discriminatory taxes on Indian traders -Recognizing legality of non-Christian marriages -Permitting the immigration of free Indians. Mahatma Gandhi -1915 returned to India -Reputation preceded him -Hailed “Mahatma” or Great Soul.
