Photos and examples of hydro technology Three Gorges Dam . On Sunday June 1, 2003 the sluices closed on what will be the world's largest dam. The Three Gorges Dam is 181 meters high and will inundate and area 650 kilometers (404 miles) upstream. The reservoir that it will create will be as long as Lake Superior. The Dam project takes advantage of a narrowing of the Chang Jiang River valley at the Xiling, Wu, and Qutang Gorges (the Three Gorges ) to create an immense water management project. It is displacing 1.13 million people and will forever change a region known for its beauty and archaeological heritage. But for China's economic developers, it is a dream come true. The dam will regulate the flow of the Yangtze River, known for centuries of terrible floods that have affected millions downstream. It will generate massive amounts of electricity to feed the growing cities and industries. It is predicted to produce as much as 10 coal fired plants It will also divert significant amounts of water from the Yangtze River to the parched north, including the large cities of Beijing and Tainjin through very elaborate and costly canals. The Chinese are well known for their water management and have been creating rice terraces as well as elaborate canal systems for centuries. This project, however, exceeds all others.

wood . This station produces power for local industry and residents, generates a valuable soil additive, and shares waste-water treatment capacity with the new sewage plant for the city of Grayling. McNeil Generating Station in Burlington, Vermont, is the only utility-owned/operated wood-fired power plant in the country. The plant's biomass gasifier can convert up to 200 tons of biomass per day into a clean-burning gas fuel for power generation. Wood gasification has the potential to meet this requirement by converting the wood into a gaseous, energy intensive fuel source that can be used in high efficiency gas turbines to generate electric power at low cost.
