There were 9 major cities of troy on top of each other. The one with the war was believed to be number 2. The iliad was made around the 8 th century BC. Probably made of several earlier pieces. It was made for entertainment. It had to do with dining and feasting in the company of other men. Families rarely ate together, it was very gender specific. If they did, there were different ways of sitting. If a woman reclines, shes a prostitute. One thing that was enjoyed was storytelling while at parties with other men in a household that held several people. Homer created the iliad in verse, so it can be sung and eventually performed. It is our earliest source on the possibility of the Trojan war. Christians had a problem with the story because there are MANY gods in the story, and they have a big role in the story, bringing the question of free will out. The romans believe they came from Trojan roots. Aeneus escaped from troy and founded the city of rome. It is parallel to the story of romulus and remus.
