EEB As a result of new biotechnology techniques and research, our understanding and ability to segregate, clone, and transfer genes has revolutionized the food industry. By identifying particular genes and there functions, biotechnology allows us to insert advantageous genes from one specie to a completely unrelated specie. In fact, over the last decade or so, plants have been engineered to be pest resistant, cold tolerant, and even have better greater value. Despite such palpable advantages of these genetically modified organisms (GMOs), some consumers and scientists have posed concern over potential human health risks and disruption to the extremely complex ecosystem. Naturally, food brands began targeting consumers who were concerned about GMOs by planting strictly natural seed, and then advertising their products as ‘GMO-Free.’ However, tests by the FDA proved that some ‘GMO-Free’ food did in fact contain a high percentage of genetically modified material. Scientists cited pollination from insects and winds from neighboring GMO farms as an explanation for the contamination.
