Loneliness “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family, they don’t belong no place.” In this book “Of Mice and Men”, George Milton and Lennie Small travel together to find work which was not seen often seen, if ever, in this time period. During the great depression especially when the dollar was not worth as much and jobs were scarce, most workers traveled alone for jobs, seeing as traveling with a companion would make it harder to get one. “But not us! An’ why? Because . . . because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.” We later see in this book George and Lennie’s relationship is not equal, and find that what we thought was a friendship is more of George having to look after Lennie in an unequal relationship. The rest of the characters in this story do not have any family or anybody they can truly consider a companion or friend. In this story we see how loneliness effects all the characters proving the theme of the novel is loneliness. The first character introduced after the main two companions in the book is Candy. Candy has one arm and is kept at the ranch because he had lost his other one in an accident while working there. After the accident Candy was given the job of “swamping out” the
