Gas Exchange: Respiratory System April 7, 2009 O 2 pathway Respiratory cardiovascular system skeletal muscle mitochondria Insects have tracheae linked by spiracle Large network of branching tubes that reach all cells in body Movements pump air Comparative Respiration -mammalian lung -bird lung -fish gill Each respirator system depends on A) respiratory medium (air or water) and B) respiratory surface -species of animal and where it is trying to extract O 2 (large SA to support highly metabolic animals) Fick Equation Rate of diffusion = K * A * (P 2 -P 1 )/D Where K= diffusion constant; alveoli diffusion constant is higher for higher metabolisms (dog = 1.5 goat) A= area of diffusion surface P 1 and P 2 = partial pressure of gas D= distance gas has to travel; thickens with diseases Mammalian Respiration 1. gas exchange O 2 venous blood 2. gas exchange CO 2 out of blood 3. metabolize compounds (remove inhaled particles) 4. filter toxic materials from blood

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
