Biology 20B Lecture: May 7 How Plants Grow -Show indeterminate growth (always keep growing) -modular -totipotent cells (1 cell whole organism), stem cells of plants Meristems -unspecialized cells -divide into additional cells -apical meristem, root and shoot tips -primary growth -lateral meristems (thickening) -secondary growth - like a tree trunk -damaged meristem - other cells become meristematic- parenchyma -after meristem generates near cells, all grow = eleongation Growth in Trees - Primary growth from apical meristems - secondary growth from lateral meristems - vascular cambium - cork cambium -heart wood is dead, sap wood is alive -girthing can kill a tree - cut all the way around a tree - cut away phloem, no nutrient transportation - cambium is close to surface IMP Cooking -celery strings made of collenchyma; we eat the shoot - carrots- root -potato- tubular stem -onion- modified flower -stolen stem-connects mainstem to new growths- strawberries CH35 Water Potential (tendency of water to move from areas of lower osmolarity to areas of
