Why will the American version succeed? -work place comedies, the tension is usually between “inside” and “outside” -british version more robust, more realistic had t act like it was a documentary: reason for having an end -american version from idea of documentary reason it can go on, it has not “aired” -tension: boss camera inside v. outside -all characters communicate with camera to office  -whole show (domestic/work) pitted against one another battle of the sexes generational conflict, parents v children, sibling rivalry, age conflict politics, hippies v conservatives, gay v straight

-british version taken a step further, more sexist, egotistical, etc. . -mundane daily happenings of. . -Situation comedies: 1, revolves around ensemble almost always. Good team work 2, intimacy with characters, audience comes to a personal relationship with  characters 3, sophisticated produced on simplified conventional genres/styles (ie. Side  interviews, single camera shooting) permanent set. Personalize desk space –  American version used many non-actors to fill parts, casting aide, behind  camera… 4, raising social issues, successfully raising current cultural/social issues.  Without giving definitive answers -American --Anything that is successful will be used- until it is dead, and beyond -they repeat everything, be able to watch while only half listening. . made for distracted viewing, laugh tracks bring attention back o allows leniency- bringing characters back, raising dead Office, started in documentary format but now they have no way to get  out of it… Shameless commercialism of situation comedies. (ie . product placement-  staples is given a bad rep, one of boredom) BBC 2 Vs NBC- -bbc supported by license fees, a public service. TV is a utility like water,  telephone. Reason for british version stopping, no pressure to continue to make more  because bbc is a utility service Nbc- the selling of the American content, and audience to the advertisers o 1, producing content is expensive.
