CTCS 412 17:04 AUG. 31 Rear window : Gender Roles -Phallic symbol of telephoto lense on Jeffries lap, masculinity is another frame of  looking and watching –laura mulvey, “the power of the gaze is objectifying  women” (subordinate to men) -gender roles (Hitchcock creating chaos). Placing the gender roles on Jeffries.  He could not work, he was the victim more than lisa, the cast was up to his waist. -female intuition (passive and active, masculinity and feminine) -gender roles reversed -he feels he is in her shadow because of entry shot (shadow of her coming over  him before the kiss) keeping of gender reversal -in slacks and shirt at close, she is becoming less feminine while reading  Himalayas book/magazine -equals? “they don’t nag they discuss” __ men threatened by discussion *mulvey’s point of women as a threat to masculinity ^ -hitchcock is spectacle but is also supporting actor, counter himself, smarter than  male but still hold female expectations - idealization- what is the most desirable characters to a man? Attributes: dress,  food prep, appearance. Most desirable characters based on assumptions (how it  should be) (both blonde, both have men around them…) -the perspective is through Jeffries gaze which gives him the status/masculinity *we see through Jeffries gaze, we see lisa through Jeffries -lisa=sexy neighbor (both live similar lives) CINEMA Construction of gender roles Reflection of existing relations Audience/spectator feeling/positioned (invite feelings of viewer) PSYCHOANAYLIS
