PREFACE MAE 461 Dynamics and Controls is an introductory course designed to provide you with a strong background in control of dynamical systems. In the aerospace curriculum you will later learn about flight systems; they’re covered in MAE 462 and in your senior design experience. In this course, the treatment is more general – providing you with the fundamentals behind how the motion of all sorts of dynamical systems is controlled. Much of the effort that goes into understanding controls deals with understanding how a dynamical system behaves. This is why the title of the course is dynamics and controls. Look at the Table of Contents and you’ll notice that Chapters 1, 2, 4, and 5 are concerned with dynamics. Chapter 3 deals with controls – but only introduces some themes for later. The controls portion of the course really begins in Chapter 6. Chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9 develop the principles of control for single degree- of-freedom systems. Then multi degree-of- freedom systems begin in Chapter 10. Chapter 10
