Exercise 2: The special publication on Contingency planning guide for information systems provides instructions,recommendations for government IT contingency planning. It refers to the interim measures to recover IT services following an emergency or system disruption. The IT systems are vulnerable to a variety of disruptions ranging from mild to severe from a variety of sources such as natural disaster to terrorists actions. While many risks are eliminated through technical,management or operational solutions,it is difficult to eliminate all the risks. An effective contingency planning is essential to mitigate the risk of system and service unavailabilty. For a contingency planning to be successful,agency management should ensure that: 1)To understand the It contingency planning process and its place within the overall continuity of operations plan. 2)To develop and reexamine their contingency policy and planning process and apply the elements of planning cycle,business impact analysis and recovery strategies. 3)Develop their IT contingency planning plans with emphasis on maintenance,training and exercising.
