For Europe, North Africa or the ‘Maghreb’ is a strategic geographical, economic, political and cultural space. Its Muslim and Arab cultural roots anchor it in the larger Middle Eastern region, while socio-economic developments also ties it to European countries. Linking the Muslim and European worlds, North Africa is of vital importance for these two spaces. A rich history of interactions between Europe and North Africa has shaped both regions. Current interactions have stressed a fear factor on both shores of the Mediterranean. Issues of terrorism, economic disparities, migration, and the rise of extremist political movements have worsened relations between Europe and North Africa.
