Unformatted text preview: Math 330 Exam 3 Outline Exam 3 will take place Monday March 30. No calculators will be allowed and you must bring your ID. All work must be shown and explained. Almost all of these problems boil down to row reducing some matrix. Thus keep this work organized and show each step. Determinants 20 points You will have three determinants to calculate. One of these will involve cofactor expansion 5 points , one will involve row and/or column operations 5 points , and one (a bit larger for 10 points ) will involve both these types of manipulations. The intended method will be identified in each part but if you are feeling clever you are welcome to do it another way. Remember you can do both row operations and column operations but proceed with care since you need to know how and when your maneuvers change the final answer and if I can’t follow your thinking I cannot give you credit. Remember that the goal of row and column operations is to produce a matrix which is either upper triangular or lower triangular. The determinant is then the product of the diagonal entries. Of course these matrices are always square and if you discover at some point that the matrix is singular, then the determinant is zero....
