2 4 Effects of early deprivation • Monkeys (Harlow) • Humans 5 Effects of social isolation in monkeys (Harlow) • Totally isolated for only the Frst 3 months: – not permanently affected by the experience • Totally isolated for the Frst 6 months: – partial recovery (e.g., incapable of normal sexual behavior) • Isolated for only the second 6 months: – recovered quite quickly • Total isolation for entire Frst year: 6 Recovery from isolation effects • A critical period? • Punishing monkeys for inappropriate behavior –ineffective • Introducing them to new environment slowly –ineffective • Pairing with a younger monkey (2-3 months) –all 1-year isolates became well adjusted
