Sean Vanderwall Cosmology Problem Set #4 October 19, 2006 Problems: 15.36, 18.6, 19.17, 19.39, 19.45 15.36 – a) Sirius appears to be the brightest star in our sky because it has the lowest apparent magnitude. b) Regulus appears to be the faintest star in our sky because it has the highest apparent magnitude. c) Antares has the greatest luminosity because it has the smallest absolute magnitude. d) Alpha Centauri A has the least luminosity because it has the largest absolute magnitude. e) Spica has the highest surface temperature because it is located in the B class, the second hottest class in the ranking of surface temperatures, and is also a B1 star, which tells us that it is hotter than any other B star. f) Antares has the lowest surface temperature because it is located in the M class, the coolest class in the ranking of surface temperatures, and is also a M1 star, which tells us that it is the coolest of any other star. g)
