560 4/28 28/04/2009 13:01:00 Atypical Development Developmental and Learning Disabilities Autism Spectrum Developmental Psychopathology pervasive developmental disabilities: intellectual disabilities, ASD o social o academic o language o Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - is a congenital developmental disorder that is characterized by problems in three areas: social development, communication and stereotypic behaviors. It encompasses a number of disorders including Autism, Retts Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Aspergers Syndrome. Intellectual Disability (Mental Retardation) Sub average intellectual functioning o <70 IQ (2 Standard deviations) o Also in adaptive functioning Onset < 18 years Etiology: cause Known biological cause (e.g., down syndrome) ~ 25% of cases Expected variations in IQ Cultural-familiar variations o Language: Hart and Risley Age 3 vocabulary: 1,100 vs. 525 By age 3, children whose parents were professionals
